The Art of Espalier Trees

A tree trained on espalier can be enormously pleasing to the eye. They are often trained flat and in symmetrical forms and in doing so are able to bear many fruit and nuts in the autumn having not had to expend much energy in branching up high or producing lots of leaves. There is a beautiful example and an extraordinary one of this art in the gardens at Kew. They have trained chestnut trees to a wonderful degree of symmetry and have produced copious quantities. Indeed you can buy chestnuts from the stalls in November at a fraction of the price available in supermarkets.
