Thanks to the increased attention brought by the media, the subject of hypnosis is hardly a strange one. Many people have a general idea of what hypnosis is all about. During a hypnosis session the individual is put into an altered state of consciousness. He is also more prone to responding to suggestions. Reaching this state can be achieved in a number of ways. In some instances a hypnotist is required for a successful hypnotism. In other instances hypnosis can be self induced through the control of key areas like one’s own breathing.
Many medical professionals are conversant with the use of hypnosis. It is used in treating individuals with behavioral and psychological ailments. Some example of these include the treatment of pain for individuals who are suffering from body pain i.e back pain. Occasionally, the pain of pregnant women has been relieved through its use . However, much of the use of hypnosis is directed at finding treatment for psychological/behavioral diseases. Some of these conditions are overating, smoking and alcohol dependence and the treatment of individuals who are insomniacs. Illnesses that are linked to possible psychological causes, such as Raynaud’s Syndrome or male impotency can also be addressed with the use of hypnosis.
When an individual is hypnotized he experience lessened awareness of the immediate environment. They lose focus of physical senses and become more in tune with their mental and psychological sides. The hypnotist is considered to be the handler during such hypnosis sessions. The level of the trance experienced by people vary from person to person. People who experience the deepest levels of trances commonly have no recollection of their actions or events once they have awakened. It is estimated that roughly 20 percent of subjects are able to attain this level of hypnosis.
Using the results of hypnosis sessions is not allowed as evidence in court. It can however be used as introduction. This is because many are of the opinion that patients in a hypnotized state tend to merge actual recounts of events with suppressed fantasies . Depression and emotional fears are also known to sometimes taint the credibility behind the recount of an hypnotic session. Such dangers of the inaccuracies, has caused many courts to only consider the evidence found with hypnotic sessions as merely indications of the individuals emotions.
